26 December 2007   Another week in Japan: Hardware and software numbers 12/17-12/23

courtesy of nintendowiifanboy.com

by Candace Savino

The Wii did well last week in Japan, finally managing to outsell the PlayStation 3 again by five to one. WiiFit, Super Mario Galaxy, and Mario and Sonic continued to find success in the software sales charts, while Wii Sports and Wii Play extend their quests toward spectacularly high numbers.

We're glad to see that Super Mario Galaxy is doing well (the game is great, in case you haven't noticed), and are still awed by the phenomenon that is Wii Sports. Only one game in the top ten (and top fifteen, for that matter) was for a non-Nintendo system, which exemplifies the company's current dominance in Japan. Chocobo's Mysterious Dungeon is mysteriously missing from the charts, however, leading some to speculate that the game sold less than FIFA 360 (which took the last place with 2,400 copies sold).

Hardware:

* DS: 319,000
* Wii: 264,000
* PSP: 162,000
* PS3: 51,000
* PS2: 24,000
* Xbox 360: 8,100

Software:

1. Final Fantasy IV (DS) --- 309,000
2. Mario Party DS (DS) --- 308,000 (1,070,000)
3. WiiFit (Wii) --- 210,000 (737,000)
4. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) --- 109,000 (680,000)
5. Wii Sports (Wii) --- 109,000 (2,371,000)
6. Dragon Quest IV (DS) --- 108,000 (963,000)
7. Wii Play (Wii) --- 105,000 (1,919,000)
8. Mario & Sonic at Beijing Olympics (Wii) --- 100,000 (307,000)
9. Doraemon Baseball (DS) --- 96,000
10. Naruto Shippuuden: Narutimate Accel 2 (PS2) --- 94,000
11. Pokemon Dungeon (DS) --- 83,000 (1,218,000)
12. Professor Layton 2 (DS) --- 68,000 (550,000)
13. Mario Party 8 (Wii) --- 60,000 (1,008,000)
14. Mario Kart DS (DS) --- 53,000 (2,660,000)

15 December 2007 - Fit for public display

1UP got their hands (feet?) on a copy of WiiFit and immediately set to playing with it making some informative videos to help us understand the game. More than the fitness aspect of the game, we like the idea of a unique interface for some arcade-style challenges (unique interfaces being one of the reasons we're, you know, Wii Fanboys).

The first three videos (including the one at the top of the post) show off some of the minigames that can be found inside the package, and we think the marble-rolling game looks awesome. Basically, in this game, your whole body becomes a joystick, tilting the platforms around with your awkward wobbles.

The fourth video is a discussion about the game by the 1UP staffers who got up on the Bumble Board and played with it. The consensus seems to be that the minigames are both more enjoyable and more physically taxing than the pure exercise stuff, which is fine with us. Given the choice, we'd rather be playing the fun parts.

13 December 2007 - WiiFit Tops in Japan

by Anoop Gantayat   ign.com

While WiiFit didn't place first in Media Create's weekly sales charts last week, it proved its legs with 149,587 in continued sales, good enough for first place in this week's chart.

5 December 2007 - WiiFit jogs to the top of Japanese sales charts in first week

by Candace Savino - nintendowiifanboy.com

We were waiting for Japanese sales numbers to be released to see how WiiFit debuted, and they have finally come. Famitsu is reporting that WiiFit ended the week at the #2 spot (behind Professor Layton 2 for the DS) in software sales, with 254,000 copies sold. Keep in mind also that since WiiFit was released later in the week, these numbers only account for two days of the game being available (most games on the Japanese charts account for four days of sales). It's also interesting to note that in two days, WiiFit has already sold more than Super Mario Galaxy sold in its first week.

Furthermore, Wii hardware sales jumped up this week, as the console pushed 71,000 units. That's approximately a 30% increase from last week's sales, and a 97% increase from two weeks ago when the Wii sold 36,000 units. Although software clearly played a big part in this growth, it seems likely that Nintendo also made sure to ship more Wiis to Japan with the release of WiiFit.

3 December 2007 - WiiFit flexes to top sales at Japan retailer

from   punchjump.com

by Marcus Lai

Nintendo Co.'s new WiiFit title flexed to the top sales rank at Amazon Japan as consumers flocked to purchase the new product on release. On Dec. 1, WiiFit reached the No. 1 sales rank at Amazon Japan's Video Games division. The fitness title includes the Wii Balance Board peripheral to facilitate more than 40 exercises, including aerobics, yoga, and muscle training. In addition, the product yielded a review score of 4.5 out of 5 at the retailer from 87 user reviews.

Nintendo debuted WiiFit in July at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Santa Monica, CA. The product will be sold early next year at an undisclosed price. The fitness title is an entry that will allow the company to continue to expand into the casual games market. Previous casual titles include the bundled Wii Sports and Wii Play. Nintendo in Oct. raised profit forecast estimates on strong demand for the Wii and Nintendo DS handheld. It expects to sell 17.5 million Wii units this business year.

2 December 2007   Tony Hawk sees possibilities of incorporating WiiFit into an upcoming game

Tony states "I've seen a little bit of it.....I think it's possible to incorporate the Wii Fit board into one of our games, but it would change the control scheme dramatically and we'd have to figure out how to make that work. So I don't know yet."

This is encouraging news as some critics fear the Hawk series has fallen in popularity recently.

Nintendo Wii Brings The Gym to You With WiiFit

by Karen Bennett

Nintendo has announced a new fitness game WiiFit which is a full on exercise product set to give you more of a workout than Wii Sports, while still retaining all the fun of gaming. WiiFit will help to keep you physically fit via a dedicated peripheral, a wireless balance board which comes with the game. There are over 40 different activities, including hula hooping, ski jumping and heading soccer balls.

The hula hooping consists of, as you'd expect, gyrating your hips with a virtual hoop onscreen and then as the game progresses, characters will throw more hoops for you to catch and rotate as many times as you can until the time runs out.

The skiing game gives you two chances to make the longest jump you can whilst keeping your balance when landing. Players can increase speed by leaning forward, the more you lean the faster you'll go, and upon reaching the jump, you stand up straight ensuring your weight is evenly balanced for a good landing.

For the football game, you will need to balance on the board moving from side to side whilst balls are fired at you to hit back on to the field and avoiding other objects that are thrown at you at the same time.

Training falls into 4 categories: Aerobics, muscle conditioning, yoga and balance games. Players can assign their height to a profile to measure body mass index and Wii fitness age as well as monitor progress and record performance statistics.

The calorie busting fun could appeal to couch potato kids as well a non gamers, perhaps using the Nintendo Wii as a slimming tool which would be a move into the lifestyle category rather than gaming, covering the market from another angle.

Nintendo has not given a release date yet for WiiFit, although its thought to hit the highstreet in early 2008.

Nintendo Announces the WiiFit!

On July 11th, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo(E3), Nintendo announced their new flagship product they will be working on, and releasing in the future. After the enormous success Nintendo received following the Nintendo Wii, and Wii Sports, Nintendo is looking to expand their consumer audience, and came out with the ingenious idea for a video game, that promotes losing weight, staying healthy, and keeping track of your exercising. Kids will like to play the game because it is a video game, and can be challenging, parents will like it because the kids are getting extra exercise, adults will like it because anyone can enjoy the game, and the whole family can make accounts and take turns. I can see this helping fight obesity in America as well, because more Americans are becoming obese, and playing more video games, when they should be exercising.

Will this solve America's obesity problem? Probably not for everyone, but I believe it will certainly help, and provide hours of entertainment in the process. In comparison to the $43.6 billion (yes, with a b  Source:Families.com) spent per year on the diet industry, I believe this will definitely be the most bang for your buck, and all in the name of fun.
